The Cloud Native Computing Foundation® (CNCF®), dedicated to fostering sustainable ecosystems for cloud native software, has announced the introduction of new certifications aimed at addressing the evolving needs of developers. These additions include three project-focused certifications and a new certification track tailored to Platform Engineering: the Certified Cloud Native Platform Associate (a multiple-choice exam) and the Certified Cloud Native Platform Engineer (a hands-on exam).
Chris Aniszczyk, CTO of CNCF, highlighted the growing interest in Platform Engineering, noting its popularity at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon in Paris earlier this year. He emphasized that certifications targeting specific roles—like the previously launched GitOps Certified Associate (CGOA)—are valuable for validating skills relevant across numerous tools and platforms.
The new Platform Engineer certifications will encompass a wide range of cloud native topics, such as CI/CD, observability, developer experience, automation, and orchestration. Additional details about these certifications are expected in the coming months.
CNCF is also launching three new project-specific certifications:
- Certified Backstage Associate (CBA) – Available now.
- OpenTelemetry Certified Associate (OTCA) – Coming by the end of 2024.
- Kyverno Certified Associate (KCA) – Coming by the end of 2024.
These certifications are part of CNCF’s vendor-neutral and community-driven approach to empowering professionals with skills applicable across diverse tools and cloud environments. To support certification preparation and skill development, CNCF offers a variety of training courses on foundational and advanced cloud native topics.
