In a bid to grow its global network across the world and reach customers and business owners, AWS has launched two new regions in Mexico and Thailand.

For Mexico

AWS has launched the AWS Mexico (Central) Region, providing developers, startups, enterprises, and public sector organizations in Mexico with greater access to secure, low-latency cloud services.

This move is part of AWS’s $5 billion investment over 15 years, including a $300,000 AWS InCommunities Fund in Querétaro to support local projects.

Economic Impact and Job Creation
AWS projects the new region will contribute $10 billion to Mexico’s GDP and support over 7,000 jobs annually in construction, engineering, telecommunications, and other industries. “This launch marks a significant step as we expand our infrastructure and deliver global innovation in machine learning and artificial intelligence,” said Prasad Kalyanaraman, AWS’s Vice President of Infrastructure Services.

Benefits for Businesses and Technology Innovation
The AWS Mexico (Central) Region features three Availability Zones to ensure high availability, fault tolerance, and low latency. It also supports customers with data residency requirements, enabling them to securely store data within Mexico. Businesses across various sectors, including BBVA, Grupo Becle, and Digital@FEMSA, are leveraging the region to enhance their services and accelerate digital transformation.

Training and Skill Development
Since 2017, AWS has trained over 500,000 individuals in cloud skills across Mexico and plans to train an additional 200,000 by 2026. Initiatives like AWS re/Start, AWS Academy, and partnerships with universities are helping prepare local talent for digital careers. In collaboration with the Mexican Secretary of Economy, AWS surpassed its goal of training 130,000 individuals in cloud skills, impacting over 138,000 people by 2024.

Sustainability Commitment
AWS is committed to sustainability, with its Mexico (Central) Region designed to operate without cooling water and optimize energy efficiency. As part of Amazon’s broader climate goals, AWS aims to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040, aligning with The Climate Pledge.

Broadening Cloud Adoption in Latin America
The new region underscores AWS’s mission to drive innovation and digital inclusion in Mexico and beyond. AWS continues to expand its global presence, now operating 114 Availability Zones across 36 regions, with plans for further expansion in New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, and Europe.

For Thailand

AWS also officially launched the AWS Asia Pacific (Thailand) Region, enabling businesses, startups, government agencies, and nonprofits to run applications and serve end users from local data centers in Thailand. As part of its long-term investment strategy, AWS plans to invest over $5 billion in Thailand, projecting an economic impact of $10 billion on the nation’s GDP while supporting over 11,000 full-time-equivalent jobs annually across various sectors.

Driving Thailand’s Digital Transformation
The new AWS Region will provide customers with cutting-edge cloud services, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, analytics, and Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities. With three Availability Zones, the region ensures high availability, low latency, and business continuity for critical applications.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand, welcomed AWS’s investment, highlighting its role in advancing Thailand’s digital economy and fostering a more inclusive digital society. Prasad Kalyanaraman, AWS VP of Infrastructure Services, emphasized the region’s potential to accelerate digital transformation and establish Thailand as a regional hub for artificial intelligence and innovation.

Empowering Businesses and Public Sector Organizations
AWS serves a diverse range of Thai customers, from major enterprises like Bank of Ayudhya (Krungsri) and Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group) to startups such as Pomelo Fashion and Sunday Technology. Public sector organizations, including the Big Data Institute (BDI) and the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), leverage AWS’s secure, scalable infrastructure to deliver services and innovation.

  • Bank of Ayudhya: Enhances customer experiences and operational efficiency with AWS’s AI and machine learning capabilities.
  • CP Group: Drives sustainable growth and digital transformation across its business units with AWS technologies.
  • Big Data Institute: Migrates its Health Link platform to AWS, enabling seamless, secure health data exchange.

Expanding Cloud Infrastructure in Thailand
The Thailand Region complements AWS’s existing investments in the country, which include six Amazon CloudFront edge locationsAWS Outposts, and an AWS Local Zone in Bangkok. These deployments bring services closer to Thai customers, ensuring ultra-low latency and enhanced performance for critical applications.

Skilling the Thai Workforce
Since 2017, AWS has trained over 50,000 individuals in cloud skills through initiatives like AWS Academy and the Tech for Digital Future program. These programs equip students and professionals with sought-after certifications and skills, fostering the next generation of cloud talent in Thailand.

Commitment to Sustainability
AWS remains committed to sustainability, aiming to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040 as part of The Climate Pledge. AWS data centers are designed for energy efficiency, with optimized operations reducing carbon footprints by up to 99% compared to traditional on-premises infrastructure.

A Brighter Digital Future for Thailand
The AWS Asia Pacific (Thailand) Region represents a significant milestone in Thailand’s journey toward becoming a digital powerhouse. With robust cloud infrastructure, innovative services, and a commitment to sustainability, AWS is well-positioned to empower Thai businesses and communities while fostering economic growth in the Asia Pacific region.
